First Holy Communion is a tradition of the Catholic Church when a child is first given the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. This rite of passage is usually celebrated when the child is seven or eight years old and the event is usually followed by a large family gathering.
The Communion gown is an important part of the day and white is traditionally worn to symbolize purity. A veil is sometimes worn to cover the head but sometimes this is replaced by another form of headdress such as a tiara or floral crown or hairclip with veil attached. Girls may also carry a communion bag in which to carry their prayer book and rosary beads and gloves are also commonly worn. The child is given religious gifts and money by friends and relatives.

For a little girl making her First Communion, picking the right gown is very important. Start trying to find the perfect gown in December or January for a Spring First Communion. First Communion gown shopping can be a great way for parents to spend time with their daughter before the big day. Don't make it stressful by waiting until you can't find what you want.
Decide if you have a family gown that you would like your daughter to wear. Many people have a tradition of keeping their First Communion gowns in the family. Remember if you have an heirloom gown, it may not still be bright white. You should look for a veil in off-white or better yet bring the gown with you in order to match it.
Think about how much money you want to spend on the gown. The cost may dictate where you go to look for a gown. Some Christian specialty stores and outlet department stores will have cheaper gowns than boutiques.
Learn about different styles before buying. First Communion gowns can be tea length or long formal gowns. Often the tea length gowns do not have as much beading or lace as full length gowns. You should also decide if you want a short sleeve or sleeveless gown.
Go to Christian specialty stores, department stores and children's gown shops to find a gown. Let your daughter try on the gowns. Pick one that you both like. You can try and steer her towards a particular gown, but remember it is her day.
