Holy Communion Dresses - Celebrating Tradition

A Holy Communion Dress symbolizes a tradition of the Catholic Church when a child is first given the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The sacrament of 1st Holy Communion is usually celebrated when a young lady is seven or eight years old. The event is celebrated by a party with family and friends.

The Holy Communion dress is an important part of the day and white is traditionally worn to symbolize purity. A veil is sometimes worn to cover the head but sometimes this is replaced by another form of headdress such as a tiara or floral crown or hairclip with veil attached. Girls may also carry a communion bag in which to carry their prayer book and rosary beads and gloves are also commonly worn. The child is given religious gifts and money by friends and relatives.

Decide if you have a family dress that you would like your daughter to wear. Many people have a tradition of keeping their Holy Communion dresses in the family. Remember if you have an heirloom dress, it may not still be bright white. You should look for a veil in off-white or better yet bring the dress with you in order to match it.

Go to Christian specialty stores, department stores and children's dress shops to find a dress. Let your daughter try on the dresses. Pick one that you both like. You can try and steer her towards a particular dress, but remember it is her day.
